Most people who start the martial arts never choose to go beyond it being a hobby. And that is okay. Some people choose to integrate the martial arts into their everyday life. Others are what we call martial arts freaks (a good thing) and make their lives revolve around their art.
For many people, starting is a new and, sometimes scary, prospect, much like going to the gym for the first time. You start thinking things like "What if I can't keep up with everyone?", "What if I am out of shape or look foolish?" These are all questions that many wonder. Get ready to start your martial arts adventure!
Here are 7 simple steps that can make anyone a martial artist! :
1) Get Started!
The famous motivational speaker Zig Ziglar is quoted as saying "You dont have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great. You need to take some action. If you aren't sure where you wish to go, do some research before hand, ask your friends who are already training or drop by for a trial class? Going and checking out a class, you will get a chance to experience it and then figure out if its what you are looking for.
2) Don't skimp on the training gear!
At first you won't really know what you need. Ask during your research or before your first class. You want quality, not price. Your equipment is going to get alot of use and you don't want to have to keep replacing it. You also don't want important safety gear failing at the wrong time because it was low quality.
3) Try to get good at just the basics first
We know those fancy moves look cool, we get it! However, most are based in the basic moves you first must learn. Skip those and you will only be setting yourself up to fail or get frustrated. Working on getting your basics good will help when the time comes for the more advanced techniques.
4) Build up your weakness first
Everyone started just where you are. You might find at first you might need to take a quick break or two during your first classes. Or maybe you don't understand the techniques that your instructor demonstrated at first. Whatever it is, remember that nothing worth having comes easy and that you will definitely improve as time goes on as long as you don’t give up and keep working hard.
5) Keep your goals real!
You need to have goals, even if at first they are simple or few. You can't go somewhere without a map. If you want to improve, you need to know where to work on and what. However, if you set to high goals and the results don't come as quick as you like, you might get discouraged and unmotivated.
6) Eat the right foods
You wouldn't put the wrong gas in your car and expect it to run right. Eating health foods will help your body repair itself and build muscle. You will also perform better in class! . Your body will thank you. It is also crucial to stay hydrated, so drink lots of water!
7) Dedicate yourself
To be successful, the first step is to show up. You need to commit to consistent and dedicated training to make progress. There will be ups and downs, but remember why you started in the first place.
So start today and get training!
