Where Are Those Abs? - Wellness Wednesday

In today's society, one of the hallmarks of fitness is a six pack of wash-board abs. We see them and immediately have visions of health and wellness. So you have been working it every day but you just can't seem to get them to show. Why?

Here is a list of what you may be doing wrong!

1) You’re doing the wrong kind of core exercises!

Believe it or not, endless crunches are NOT the secret to a hard abdomen! Southern Illinois University conducted a study to find out what effect ab exercises have on abdominal fat. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada. In fact, abdominal exercises such as crunches were found to reek havoc on posture and spinal issues.

The real secret was doing compound exercises? Deadlifts, squats, and overhead presses tone your abdominals because they require you to stabilize your core throughout the exercise.

2) Protein Shakes done wrong!

Your protein shake may be causing you to bloat up like a puffer fish! Milk based protein shakes can make you feel bloated afterwards, especially if you have a sensitive digestive system.

Before on the look out for the following:

  • Sucralose: This sweetener is known to cause digestive distress.

  • Choose vegetable based protein powders like brown rice, pea, and hemp. They are more hypoallergenic.

3) You failed math in school

Maintaining a calorie deficit can burn fat more efficiently. Unless you get your numbers right, you may be off and eating too much.

Use your workouts to make sure that you burn enough calories to meet your weight loss goals.

4) You’ve become an training

Overtraining can mess up your hormones, leading to fat storage instead of loss. Your recovery is as important as eating right and exercising! Take adequate rest periods to allow for protein synthesis.

5) You are just eating without a clue

You cant lose weight if you are just mindlessly eating. You can exercise all you want but if your diet is off, you will never see those abs! Diet is 80 to 90% of the equation of fat loss. You should avoid processed food, minimize carbs, eat up on the protein and healthy fats, and avoid the following foods like the plague:

  • All white sugars and flours

  • alcohol

  • sugar laden sweets

  • excessive dairy

Now put that slice of pizza down and get moving – you’ll feel much better!
